Jewish Buddhism
(Again, an old chestnut from my former work's inbox...)
Take only what is given.
Own nothing but your robes and an alms bowl.
Unless you have the closet space.
Let your mind be as a floating cloud.
Let your stillness be as the wooded glen.
And sit up straight. You'll never meet the Buddha with posture like that.
There is no escaping karma.
In a previous life you never called, you never wrote, you never visited.
And whose fault was that?
Wherever you go, there you are.
Your luggage is another story.
To practice Zen and the art of Jewish motorcycle maintenance, do the following:
Get rid of the motorcycle. What were you thinking?
Learn of the pine from the pine.
Learn of the bamboo from the bamboo.
Learn of the kugel from the kugel.
If there is no self, whose arthritis is this?
Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out.
Forget these simple things and attaining Enlightenment will be the least of your problems.
The Tao has no expectations.
The Tao demands nothing of others.
The Tao does not speak.
The Tao does not blame.
The Tao does not take sides.
The Tao is not Jewish.
Drink tea and nourish life.
With the first sip, joy.
With the second, satisfaction.
With the third, Danish.
The Buddha taught that one should practice loving-kindness to all sentient beings.
Still, would it kill you to find a nice sentient being who happens to be Jewish?
To Find the Buddha, look within.
Deep inside you are ten thousand flowers.
Each flower blossoms ten thousand times.
Each blossom has ten thousand petals.
You might want to see a specialist.
Be here now. Be someplace else later.
Is that so complicated?
Zen is not easy. It takes effort to attain nothingness.
.... And then what do you have? Bupkes.

the hilarity of my sister
Oh zit,
why do you have to be so prominent? yet dig to the heart of my soul.
you are so big and right under my eye, i can barely see.
and I am squinting every day.
Oh zit,
why couldn't you just go away, every day you get redder and redder
and I want to pick you. but you are one of those under ground zits.
and I can't.
So I'll just look at my computer, with a popeye stare
and look forward to the day when you are gone.
Or another message entitled "pee you," which she sent after having outlined for me the night before everything she had ordered from room service:
"since i described everything i ate yesterday, i bet you were wondering how that would all smell later.
the answer is not good."
Snort.

gratuitous blonde jokes
I was cleaning out my office email account and came across these gems in an email from 2006. They're not the best I've ever seen, but they are chuckleworthy...
LOGIC
Two blondes living in Oklahoma were sitting on a bench talking........ and one blonde says to the other, "Which do you think is farther away..........Florida or the moon?"
The other blonde turns and says "Helloooooooo, can you see Florida...???"
CAR TROUBLE
A blonde pushes her BMW into a gas station. She tells the mechanic it died.? After he works on it for a few minutes, it is idling smoothly. She says, "What's the story?"
He replies, "Just crap in the carburetor"
She asks, "How often do I have to do that?"
SPEEDING TICKET
A police officer stops a blonde for speeding and asks her very nicely if he could see her license.
She replied in a huff, "I wish you guys would get your act together. Just yesterday you take away my license and then today you expect me to show it to you!"
RIVER WALK
There's this blonde out for a walk. She comes to a river and sees another blonde? on the opposite bank. "Yoo-hoo!" she shouts, "How can I get to the other side?"
The second blonde looks up the river then down the river and shouts back, "You ARE on the other side."
AT THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE
A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor's office and said that her body hurt wherever she touched it.
"Impossible!" says the doctor. "Show me"
The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left breast and screamed, then she pushed her elbow and screamed in even more. She pushed her knee and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream.
The doctor said, "You're not really a redhead, are you?
"Well, no" she said, "I'm actually a blonde."
"I thought so," the doctor said. "Your finger is broken."
KNITTING
A highway patrolman pulled alongside a speeding car on the freeway. Glancing at the car, he was astounded to see that the blonde behind the wheel was knitting! Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, the trooper cranked down his window, turned on his bullhorn and yelled, "PULL? OVER!"
"NO!" the blonde yelled back, "IT'S A SCARF!"
BLONDE ON THE SUN
A Russian, an American, and a Blonde were talking one day. The Russian said, "We were the first in space!" The American said, "We were the first on the moon!"
The Blonde said, "So what? We're going to be the first on the sun!"
The Russian and the American looked at each other and shook their heads. "You can't land on the sun, you idiot! You'll burn up!" said the Russian.
To which the Blonde replied, "We're not stupid, you know. We're going at night!"
IN A VACUUM
A blonde was playing Trivial Pursuit one night. It was her turn. She rolled the dice and she landed on Science &Nature. Her question was, "If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it?"
She thought for a time and then asked, "Is it on or off?"
BLONDE PETS
A girl was visiting her blonde friend, who had acquired two new dogs, and asked her what their names were. The blonde responded by saying that one was named Rolex and one was named Timex.
Her friend said, "Whoever heard of someone naming dogs like that?""HELLLOOOOOOO......," answered the blond. "They're watch dogs!"

Too provocative
Kate Surgeon showered this morning with a dirty Venetian. Oh, no wait. She showered with her dirty venetian blinds. Same thing, right?
Kate Surgeon took a pole dancing class last night and, though there were no mirrors in the studio, she's pretty sure she looked like a deranged cat in heat.
Too Much Information
Kate Surgeon has three zits she'd like to introduce you to: Snap, Crackle, and Pop!
Kate Surgeon wonders if you ever wonder, after looking at a poop, what you ate.
Too Sappy
Kate Surgeon misses him. Like crazy.
Kate Surgeon liked his imperfections best.
Kate Surgeon is pretty sure she was the only one crying at pole dancing class.
Kate Surgeon wants to shake him, and then smooch him, and then shake him, and then smooch him.
Too Vague
Kate Surgeon believes in avocados.
Kate Surgeon eats too much dried mango.
Kate Surgeon is crossing her fingers.
Too Work-Related
Kate Surgeon would like the receptionists at work to follow her around everywhere. They think she's HILARIOUS!
Kate Surgeon regrets to inform you that her office crush has found another job. Flowers may be sent to her at the office.
Kate Surgeon now has only two bottles of wine in her bottom drawer. The others have found their way home. (And by "home," she means her innards.)

fashionable and late, that's me.

Or these:

Nobody I see wearing them looks remotely good, and they remind me of being a senior in high school, which isn't really what I want to be reminded of on the subway. Please, everyone, STOP WEARING THEM.
3) A co-worker came into my office the other day and said, "You have a date, don't you?" I didn't, so I asked why he thought I did.
"You're wearing earrings."
Apparently I only look nice when I have an appointment for smooching. Note to self.
4) Going to the beach on a cold day (i.e., this past Saturday) is a good way to make sure you only see the most bikini-worthy bodies wearing bikinis. Those who should consider other beachwear were considering other activities all together.
So was I in mine? Yes. Yes I was. Under my hoodie.
5) Speaking of what I wear...
I was at my friends' house over the weekend doing my laundry when they came home. I, of course, was dressed to the nines in a fuscia circle skirt and a black and white striped top, all supported by a good-looking pair of "neutral" crocs.
"Could this be why I'm single?" I asked. My friend reminded me that, while this was a perfectly acceptable "weekend outfit," perhaps I shouldn't go anywhere but home after leaving.

that ain't right!
Pass the cream, please.
--------
On my way to the theatre the other night, I was traversing 42nd street with the hoardes and masses when there was a traffic bottleneck. Looking to find the source of the problem (and avoid it like the plague), I identified the "Traffic Enforcement" van from the police department blocking the box.
Nice move, guys!
--------
The theatre I was trying to get to was the Delacorte theatre in Central Park, for a production of the Winter's Tale. It was a strong production of an iffy play, but I have something I think anyone headed to outdoor theatre should know:
If you fart in an open air theatre, it still smells bad.
Don't do it.
--------
I sent an email out the other day, trying to clarify a point, and when I asked the recipient if he understood it, he wrote back simply, "presactly."

fat and skinny
On the way to work the other day, I was on the subway with a fat man, and he was wearing Fat Man Pants. I knew they were Fat Man Pants because he was really rather round, and he had them jacked up over his belly, and only Fat Man Pants will accommodate that kind of behavior.
But what I want to know is this: why don't Fat Man Pants Manufacturers understand that the pockets of Fat Man Pants should not be lined in white? Nothing says Fat Man Pants louder than the gaping white linings of pockets stretched over rather round bellies.
Just sayin'.
SKINNY
I was recently at Rockaway beach, discussing the fact that this year I've actually developed tan lines. (Ok, they're really like Malevich's White on White, but that's neither here nor there.) My friend shared his beliefs on the topic, saying that tan lines "are like a highlighter for the fun parts."
Not a bad point.

a farewell to (ar)M(s)
To my dear, sweet, wonderfully poo-brown M train,I miss you already. You've only been gone a day, and I am bereft with grief. Now what train will I ride when I want to see nobody but twelve Hasidm? How will I know what's going on with the tattooed FedEx guy I see every single morning, hungover or not? (You know how I secretly think he's hot, even though we probably have absolutely nothing in common but a tracking numer.)
What will become of my friendship with Robert My Train Friend? (Ok, ok, in all fairness, that's a moot point, as I haven't seen this total stranger since he gave me $175 in gift cards and a Movado watch.) But if I changed my mind and wanted to find Robert of the M Train, how would that be possible?
And my other train friends, like Orange Backpack Guy, Sleeps With Mouth Open, and Big Fat Snorguling* Guy? What about them?
I know you think this is for the best, that you want to "explore new territory," and "have a more fulfilling life," but I refuse to accept this change. I was happy with you, even though you only came at 8:15, 8:35 and 8:45, and if I missed the 8:35, I was pretty much screwed. True love isn't because, it's despite.
So what if your stations were disgusting, plague-filled, rat-infested, pigeon-housing hell holes? They were my disgusting, plague-filled, rat-infested, pigeon-housing hell holes.
Go on. Live your new life. See what Sixth Avenue is like. Find out how the hipsters treat you in upper Brooklyn. I promise you, it won't be the same.
I will survive. But I'll be really crowded and unhappy about it.
Formerly yours,
Kate
p.s. if you ever decide to come back, I'll be here with open arms. And an unlimited metrocard.
*Snorguling = Snoring + Gurgling = Not Delicious

what are the odds of that?
We have an exam tonight -- the first of three, one of which will be DROPPED in calculating our final grade, a concept with which, as a Fancy Schmancy College Grad, I am extremely unfamiliar. Dropping an exam? I thought that was something you could only (ruefully) do into a puddle. Oh, I have much to learn!
But instead of studying -- because it's an open notes exam (see shock and astonishment, above), I thought I would share with you some of the brilliant things that have crossed my brainpan while in said idea-factory. However, in looking back over my notes, the things I thought were funny in the classroom of boredom, death, and despair, aren't actually funny.
Well, except this: there was one example where the professor, a native Japanese speaker, was talking about the probability related to tossing a coin. For several minutes, we were all listening to her go on about "receiving heads," "having tails," and "measuring spread."
Even the twelve year olds were embarrassed.

can you hear the drums, Fernando?
The other day, there was a food tasting in one of the conference rooms, and they had fancy schmancy stuff like salmon and eggplant roulades and chocolate covered strawberries and grilled veggies. I loaded up a plate of non-walking goods, and when I got back to the office, Fernando noticed that I had asparagus, which he had neglected to choose.
He looked at my plate, looked at me, and said, "Can I have one asparagus? I want the pee."
---------
Have you heard of a thumb drive? It's one of those portable memory devices, also known as a jump drive, a memory stick, a flash drive... you know what I'm talking about.
In Fernando's world, though, a thumb drive is more like a coat drive, where everyone brings the thumbs they're not using to the office and then they get collected by charity workers. Because thumblessness is a huge problem in this world.
---------
Fernando and I took a trip out to the wilds of Bushwick recently to see a friend's show, and on the way there, we saw the most ghetto, hand-written ad for Herbalife that we've ever seen. It might as well have been advertising The Quitter's Version of Herbalife. Or Herbadeath.
After pantomiming what someone on Pathetic Herbalife would be like for a while, we then started rewriting the ad. No longer would you be purchasing Herbalife if you called the hand-scrawled number -- you could get GERBILIFE! A life filled with gerbils! All for $29.95 a month! Or better yet, you could get BURBALIFE! Turn your life into a burbling brook for only $29.95 a month! Call now!
---------
On the way home from that same trip, we saw a woman on the subway who was, to be polite, NOT petite. Fernando leaned over to me and whispered, "That woman has some serious potty mask."
I sat for a second, wondering what in god's green earth he was talking about. The woman was fat, but her face looked fine.
"Potty mask?" I asked him.
He closed his eyes, rolled them back into his head with laughter, and said, "No, BODY MASS."
Oh, yeah. Body mass.

I can barely make sense of this myself, so good luck!
Unfortunately, this occasionally leads to carrying around a list of things that makes no sense. Which, also unfortunately, leads me to sharing them with you without a hint of compunction.
Like this one. The note says simply, "Tastes like ass control."
Now, I remember it being funny at the time -- I mean, REALLY funny at the time -- but I no longer have any recollection why.
I mean, inherently, it's kind of a funny idea. What exactly is ass control, and what would it taste like? Can't be good. (I'm thinking it probably tastes like rotten spinach.)
So in an effort to track down the source of this mysterious phrase, I asked Fernando if he had said it, as I remember it being a guy who spoke it. My office mate denies any knowledge of it, and given that he's not big on swearing, I'm choosing to believe him on this.
Which leaves it as something a date must have said. I've run into these verbal doggie bags before, and they're tricky, because lord knows why I wrote it down. Could be: a) because I really liked him and found him funnier than perhaps I should have, b) because I really DIDN'T like him, and was trying not to look him in the face, or c) I was indifferent and wanted something to do, and this note was the dating equivalent of doodling.
Having dragged this poor phrase through the mud (and not being any the better off for it), I will now cross it off the list and consign it to the lint-and-booger pile of history.
(that exists, right?)

like free cookies in the office pantry
Or is that just me?
Anyway, I have for you today some useful bathroom tips and observations:
1. A good place for Listerine? NOT up your nose.
2. An easy way to cut down on your electricity and water bill? Use a mentholated face wash in your shower. That way, when you're done, your face smells all eucalyptus-y and you can't tell that your bathroom towels desperately need to be washed, because the koala-food smell overpowers the funk that an old bath towel usually gives off. Extends the time between towel-washings almost infinitely!
3. When you put egg yolks into the toilet and then pee on them, they turn hard-boiled colored. (I'm not entirely sure when this nugget of information will come in handy, but I figured I'd share it anyway. Thank me later.)

such wrongness as has never graced my inbox
First, I checked my email, only to find a message from a stranger criticizing my resume. Rude! Not only did I not ask for this person's opinion, I didn't do anything to solicit it. Take note, readers: just because someone has a LinkedIn profile does not mean that someone wants your critique of it. (Especially if that someone is me!)
Peg Crits (sounds like a pseudonym to me!) told me that my vocabulary was boring, I had a spelling or grammar mistake (but she wouldn't tell me where), and that I would never ever get anywhere in life... without spending $399 to have a professionally designed LinkedIn profile!
(Did I mention RUDE?)
Second, I got a new message in my dating profile, so I logged in there to check it, and what did I get? A fifty-something guy in Florida who has a need to show me something INCREDIBLY WRONG:
Yeah, that's right. I got a schlong picture. (Or, as my mother pointed out later, it could be a "schlort" picture.) Please note the festive location, the looking-like-black-business-socks effect of the water, and the PIECES OF TAPE ON THE EDGE OF THE PICTURE, INDICATING THAT THIS WAS TAPED TO SOMETHING! So wrong.
So very, very wrong.
The other picture he sent me had balloons tied to his schlort, and a kitty cat who was very confused.
And, what, dear god, was the third wrong thing? Nobody was awake or around for me to complain to!
p.s. Normally I would be kind enough to censor the face of someone posing in a photo like that, but my theory is that if you're sending around schlort pictures, you should expect them to end up on the internet.
